In East Africa, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom has been managing projects in Tanzania and Kenya from 1991.

Since the early nineties, Tanzania has been going through a political and economic transition process towards a pluralistic political system and a free market economy.

“The Foundation aims to strengthen the Civic United Front to fulfil its constitutionally mandated role”

The Foundation assists this transition through its collaboration with liberal partner organisations in the political sphere and in the realm of civil society.

For many years, the Foundation has been supporting one of the biggest opposition parties in Tanzania, the Civic United Front (CUF), which also forms part of the governing coalition in the semi-autonomous Zanzibar archipelago.

The Foundation aims to strengthen the party to enable it to fulfill its constitutionally mandated role of holding government to account.

Furthermore, the Foundation works with partners in civil society to identify where judicial, economic and political reforms are needed and to develop reform concepts in these areas.
