Training in freedom

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation works across the globe to promote and develop liberal solutions to societies' problems.

The focus of our work lies on promoting human rights, the rule of law, the tenets of a market economy and liberal democracy. We do this by providing political and policy advice, facilitating international political dialogue and offering political education.

The indispensable elements of liberal democracy include the separation of powers, an independent judiciary, a multi-party system, free elections, participation of citizens, decentralised decision making processes, the separation of state and society, independent media and freedom of association. In cooperation with partner organisations, the work of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in sub-Saharan Africa concentrates on securing and extending democratic practice on the basis of these elements.

Seminars, conferences as well as support for publications and empirical research form part of our work. Our target group consists of people and associations from all walks of life and all social strata who contribute to the broad aims of a liberal democracy. We attend in particular to people who by virtue of their position in politics, the economy or society are able to influence decisions in a liberal spirit and who can alter matters in their countries in line with liberal principles.
